S2T New Thread design
In support of the RMS MaxDrill Hercules Tool has developed a proprietary high strength / high torque thread that when tested resulted in one of the highest strength threads on the market. The NC 50 or 4 1/2 IF equivalent thread design was tested with multiple torque makeup/breakout at 64,000ft lbf torque, which is more than double the torque requirements of the NC50 or API 4 1/2IF. The connection experienced no galling or thread distortion. This connection, torqued 64kft lbf, was then tested at elevated temperature, 150C, bending the connection at 15 degrees per 100ft multiple times holding for 5 minutes each time, with a break / make after each cycle, experienced no failure or galling. The same connection repeated the test at 22 degrees per 100ft checking each time with no effect on the connection. A tensile test of the same connection that was torqued and bent failed at 1,660,000lb at 150C. The test article dimensions are at 6.5″ outer diameter X 3.50″ inner diameter using 4145 alloy commercial HT.
Due to the high torque capability and tensile strength this proprietary thread can be utilized to create adapters for drillstring components that have limited cutbacks, consequently extending their valuable lifespan. Additionally, this thread is excellent for drilling motor applications having the ability to compress, no radial movement and high fatigue strength.
